James and Sarah

After their marriage in 1884 they returned to Brisbane where they ran the Brisbane Club Hotel in Wharf Street. While here their first two children James Wilson McKeag, 23 April 1885, and Mary Elizabeth (Cissy), 20 March 1887, were born. Their next child, Thomas David, is shown born at Union Street Spring Hill. As Spring Hill is an inner suburb it may be feasible that this was their residence while they ran the Brisbane Club Hotel. By the earlt 1890s they had moved to Glenferrie in Melbourne where they conducted a greengrocery at 226 Burwood Road (now part of a Bunnings Warehouse) In 1893 Dorothea Maude (Dorrie) was born in Hawthorn. Shortly after this the couple separated, James’ destination is unknown but may have been Mackay in Queensland while Sarah stayed in Melbourne with the children and is recorded as the proprietor of the Glenferrie Fruit Shop.

According to the McKeag Register Sarah spent her last years with James (Wilson) and Mentonia (May). I have always believed that she lived with John & Cissy. Sarah and Cissy are buried in the same plot at Fawkner Cemetery.

James Wilson McKeag (1855 - 1945) and Mentonia (May) Jones (1885 - 1959)

James and May married at St Patricks Cathedral in Melbourne on 24 September 1910. As children Charles and May took us to visit May who lived in Sumner Ave Northcote. This was during the 1950s and I was around 10 at the time and have little recollection of her.

Children

James Eric married Ila Morgan in 1939 and had two children, James Wyndham and Paul Anthony. Lorna May did not marry. When I first knew her she lived in Camberwell and had a hairdressing saloon. She went out with John Marriott who had a steel processing factory in Sunshine (area) for some years. Lorna’s religious beliefs prevented her from marrying John as he was a non-catholic and divorced. At this time a Roman Catholic marrying a non-catholic was frowned on, never mind a divorcee. This was unfortunate as John was a very nice person and discussed the problem with my parents many times.
